Homeschooling in Sweden to be Made Virtually Impossible
In the proposal for a new Swedish school law, the Swedish government severely restricts the right to homeschool in Sweden. Please help us
by signing our petition to the Swedish governement: Petition Link
Already today it is hard in Sweden to get permission to homeschool, and there are only about one hundred children being homeschooled here.
If the proposed law is implemented, homeschooling will be close to totally banned, although the right to homeschool is guaranteed in the
European Convention on Human Rights, a convention incorporated into Swedish laws. Also the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights
protects the right to homeschool, and although it is not Swedish law Sweden hold the UN in high regard.
Homeschoolers in Sweden are concerned about this, of course, and several families consider moving abroad.
The situation in Sweden would, if the proposed law takes effect, be comparable with the situation for German homeschoolers,
with harassments, fining and political asylum abroad for reasons of homeschooling.
The Swedish Association of Home Education, Rohus, among others, has presented a consideration on this proposal,
with strong arguments why NOT to implement this law. We are working hard to spread knowledge about homeschooling and the proposed law,
among the Swedish people and abroad. We have a strong support from foreign homeschoolers, associations of homeschooling, and experts on
homeschooling.
Rohus has set up two petitions to be sent to the Swedish government, one for non-residents of Sweden,
Non-Swede Petition Link and one for resident Swedes
Swede Petition Link. We would be very grateful if you could sign one of these to
help us. I believe that if homeschooling is made illegal in some countries, it affects other countries, as countries often follow the lead of other
countries, and so one day you could be affected too.
The world is looking our way, wondering what will be next. Now time will tell what will happen to homeschooling in Sweden,
but we must hope that there will be a change in the proposed law, and that homeschooling will be an alternative to school also in the future.
